My First Blog Post

With the indisputable leaps the human race has made in the past 50 years regarding health care, technology, our standard of living, communications, leisure time & activities (among other things); I wonder if the average person is as happy and well-adjusted as our counterparts of 1959. Do we understand what is important in life today as well as we did then? Are our children taught and nurtured as well in today’s society? Is our society and culture healthier than before the tumultuous sixties? What hath progress wrought?

I just got back from a convenience store after reading this first blog post. The young lady behind the counter looked like Elvira but her name-tag said her name was Ashley.I counted the piercings in Ashley’s face and lips as these questions pierced my brain.I said hello to Ashley and I may as well have been speaking to the rack of stimulants, condoms and lottery tickets in front of me.I thought 1959,I didn’t think Ashley could remember 1989!I paid for my 2 liters of carbonated sugar water (Pepsi) which now costs 2 bucks and said thank you.Ashley never looked up from the counter,or maybe she did and I couldnt tell through all of the black make up around her eyes and managed a smirk,or maybe it was a smile I couldn’t be sure with all of the piercings on her lip, maybe she was just in pain.It would seem that progress has wrought, the wrath of the progressives, techno fried zombies and gothic vampires selling stimulants, condoms, lottery tickets and Pepsi. The sad truth is that Ashley may have been born after 1989 but she looked old enough to vote.Isn’t that just Obamarific!!!

However we look at it it has to be about what we do with thchnology and progress not what it does for us. The world is starting to be awaken by the fact that many of these advances have driven a wedge among us in the way we interact. There is nothing stronger than a good look in the eyes and a solid hand shake but we think an e-mail has more value. Technology has become a place to hide, new interactive solutions are starting to emerge but we need to teach our children what human interaction should be as this is really all we’ve, past that point we are machines….

If we consider advancements cell phones, computers, ipods etc. then truly we have done well in the past fifty years. But healthcare finds us with one of the lowest brith mortality rates in the modern world. Doctors know how to treat less but prescribe more. The cost is so high most can not afford to enter the office. We worship money, despise human life and could not count change back even if Ashely didn’t have all the peircings. We lock our doors only to be ripped off by the very computer that we include as one of our advancements.

While the culture slips toward inevitable bankruptcy in every area of life, not just economics, we observe its decline without realizing that the seeds were sown 2500 years ago in the elevation of the individual. Greek metaphysics demands that every man do what is right in his own eyes. The end of that thinking is chaos or the rule of one. We are well on the way. Read James Black, When Nations Die.

T.S. Eliot posed the question: “Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?”
